About My Practice
Whether you’re a first-time seeker or a seasoned tarot aficionado, Mission Tarot provides a safe, non-judgmental space to help you connect with your intuition. I see tarot card reading as a form of therapy: much like yoga or meditation, it’s a spiritual practice and a tool for psychological wellness.
I do in-person and online readings for individuals and small groups, and am available for parties and events.
Favorite Decks
I'm a Rider-Waite-Smith diehard! I find it very accessible -- it's visually intuitive and many of the symbols feel familiar, even if you're new to Tarot. The RWS's major downside is that the court cards are a bit old-fashioned, and require a bit of finagling to incorporate queer and nonbinary identities.
I'd love to use any deck that speaks to you, though I generally "translate" it into the RWS when my intuition fails me. I'm also conversational with the Tarot of Marseilles, and love a lot of the literature around it: Alejandro Jodorowsky's half-textbook, half-memoir "The Way of Tarot" is a must-read; "Meditations on the Tarot" is my absolute favorite book on the Major Arcana.
Values & Guidelines
I approach the tarot with a broad, flexible framework that incorporates psychology, occult science, hermetic spirituality, and radical empathy. Unlike many fortune tellers, I don’t try to predict the future. Instead, we’ll use the cards to reframe the present moment and seek insight into the issues at hand. It’s a collaborative process: you’ll tell me about your situation and then we’ll form a question, draw cards, and co-interpret the resulting spread. You have the answers – the cards and I are just here to help!
Here are my four guiding values:
- Client empowerment. As a querent (Latin for “one who seeks”), you’re the expert when it comes to your life and your relationship to tarot. I welcome participation and authenticity, and let the querent lead as I try to meet their unique needs. Tarot exists for people, not vice versa.
- Empathy. I welcome openness and vulnerability, so it’s my responsibility to create a safe and non-judgmental container for each reading. I treat the querent with unconditional positive regard, and am prepared to sit with traumatic experiences, mental health issues, and intense shame, fear, and anger.
- Polyvalence. The cards don’t have static meanings; by design, every arcanum is always up for interpretation. Each reading should conjure an idea that is relevant and “alive” to the querent. I keep a flexible framework that tries to account for diversity in class, gender, race, age, culture, spirituality, and life experience.
- Presence. At its best, tarot is simply a way for people to share space together. I believe that magic only emerges from interpersonal connection, and so I treat the occult with a healthy amount of irreverence. It’s important to remember that tarot originated as a deck of playing cards – it’s supposed to be fun!
